Palm Beach Gardens council unanimously opposes proposed county MSTU for fire-rescue; approves budget ordinance and other routine items

Mayor Tinsley opened a council discussion after resident Sal Faso raised concerns during public comment that an MSTU bill was moving through county channels without adequate community notice and that the Solid Waste Authority had approved another incinerator project raising air-quality questions. A second public commenter, identified as Miss Martin (a Carleton Oaks board director and NCNC board member), told the council the tax would impose a “double tax,” undermine regional resilience efforts and remove residents’ control over local services.
Council members voiced parallel concerns. Vice Mayor Middleton and other members warned that the MSTU would create duplication and operational inefficiencies, remove local control and risk double taxation. Several members noted that Palm Beach Gardens provides substantial automatic aid to surrounding areas without compensation and that any county-imposed MSTU could create financial and operational conflicts. The council agreed to present a united front at upcoming League of Cities and county meetings and to contact the local legislative delegation.
The council approved Resolution 85-2025 opposing the Palm Beach County local bill relating to the fire-rescue MSTU and encouraging the county delegation to reject the proposal; the motion carried 5-0.
Public comment also included a warning about a recently approved Solid Waste Authority incinerator project and a planned NCNC community meeting at the SWA auditorium on December 4 for residents to learn more. Sal Faso urged residents to monitor the project; his claims about potential dioxin emissions were presented as concerns and were not resolved at the meeting.
