Passaic Mayor Fernandez told the City Council on Oct. 9 that a recent police operation led by the city’s department removed about “1 kilo” of cocaine from the streets.
The mayor said detectives and captains worked the operation and that officers also seized other drugs, paraphernalia and weapons. “They were able to remove 1 kilo of cocaine off of our streets,” he said, adding that the operation was handled locally though follow-up investigations and any charges will involve the prosecutor and potentially state or federal partners.
Council members asked whether the department works with outside agencies; Fernandez said the operation was led and directed by city police but that the department routinely collaborates with county, state and federal officials on investigations and that evidence and information will be provided to the prosecutor for charging decisions.
The mayor thanked the department’s captains, the chief and detectives for what he described as “excellent police work” that prevented those substances and weapons from entering the community. The council did not vote on this report; Fernandez introduced it as part of his administrator’s update and framed it as an example of ongoing public-safety activity.
The council did not provide additional operational details during the meeting, saying that some aspects could not be discussed publicly for investigative reasons.
