Planning commission continues Amtrak station conditional-use hearing to Sept. 24

The Oregon City Planning Commission set a date-certain continuance to Sept. 24 for CU01-02, the city’s conditional-use application for a proposed Amtrak station and adjacent parking.
City engineer Nancy Krushow presented the proposal and answered commissioners’ questions about reuse of the existing freight depot, platform elevation relative to flood levels and project drawings. Krushow said the project team intends to reuse the original depot building where feasible; commissioners noted the depot sits roughly 80 yards from the proposed station site.
Commissioners also discussed a revised traffic impact study. Krushow summarized findings: closing 17th Street could be mitigated by signal improvements, right-turn lanes and other intersection work. "The impacts are mitigable without much difficulty at all," Krushow said, cautioning that closing a connection is not desirable for multimodal connectivity but may be balanced against community benefits brought by a station. Commissioners asked staff to include the revised traffic study in the packet for the continued hearing.
Because the applicant is the city and staff resources are limited, the commission set a date-certain continuance for Sept. 24 to ensure adequate notice and a complete packet. The motion to continue was made and seconded; the commission recorded ayes and continued the matter to Sept. 24.
Next steps: staff will include the revised traffic impact study and supplemental materials in the Sept. 24 hearing packet; the commission will re-evaluate depot reuse, access and mitigation options at that hearing.
