Marion honors finance deputy Brian McKenzie and recognizes energy-efficient public works facility

At the Oct. 23 meeting the council presented a city recognition to Brian McKenzie, Marion's first deputy finance director, who was named a Government Finance Officers Association Outstanding Public Service Award winner. The city noted McKenzie was one of 53 national awardees and one of two from Iowa, crediting his work on revamping the capital improvement program and improving asset-replacement planning.
"This award recognizes what we all already knew: Brian is an outstanding public servant," the presiding officer said. McKenzie thanked nominators, particularly Leanne Cary, and praised his finance team for collaborative work.
Council also highlighted an energy-efficiency award presented to the city and Shive Hattery Incorporated for the new public works facility. The city engineer/public works director said the facility "achieved a 66% annual energy savings compared to the commercial new construction program baseline" and that the award was presented at the American Institute of Architects convention in Des Moines.
The recognitions underscore the city's focus on transparency, long-term stewardship of assets and sustainable building practices.
