Council hears update on South Elliot drainage project; council outlines maintenance expectations

Public works staff updated the Pryor Creek City Council on progress for the South Elliot drainage improvement on Nov. 18. The project includes burying open drainage ditches using three parallel underground pipes to replace recessed ditches, making adjacent yards flush with the sidewalk and reducing standing water and maintenance hazards.
Staff said crews have buried drainage from portions of 15th to 14th and 14th to 13th streets, completed recapping at several intersections and worked to minimize traffic interruptions during school hours. The project is intended to reduce longstanding maintenance burdens on property owners and improve safety. Council clarified property owners remain responsible for mowing the areas adjacent to their lots, though the street department can engage to neutralize soils or install barriers if maintenance becomes a public task.
Council noted the success of the pilot area may prompt requests for similar work elsewhere; staff said they will prioritize projects and begin work on Cemetery Hill next.
