Pittsburg commission approves three city-code updates, schedules executive session

The Pittsburg Commission on Oct. 28 approved three ordinances that revise city licensing and alcohol regulations to conform with state law and authorized the mayor to sign the measures. The actions were described by staff as language clean-up suggested after consultation with the Kansas League of Municipalities.

City staff told commissioners the ordinance package includes: G1378, which removes obsolete dance-hall language from section 6.2; G1379, which updates grounds for disqualification from cereal-malt-beverage licenses in section 6.74; and G1380, which removes residency prohibitions in section 6.205 for certain licenses. Major Henderson authored the memo summarizing the proposed changes, which staff said are not intended to change practice but to bring code text into alignment with state statute.

Commissioner Chuck moved to approve G1378; the motion was seconded by Cheryl and approved by voice vote. Commissioners approved G1379 and G1380 in subsequent motions. Earlier in the meeting the commission also approved the consent agenda by roll call (Brooks — yes; McNay — yes; Lindsau — yes; Sigley — yes).

City staff answered a few clarifying questions during the brief discussion, repeatedly characterizing the package as “language cleanup” and saying the changes simply remove outdated provisions rather than creating new restrictions or permissions.

The commission recessed into a 15-minute executive session to discuss the potential acquisition of recreational real property under the quoted KSA real-property exception, with the meeting set to resume in the commission room. The next regular meeting was confirmed for Wednesday, Nov. 12.
