Pharr announces grants interim director, public health director marks one-year anniversary; Avocado Festival set for Oct. 11

Elizabeth Diaz introduced herself and said she is serving as the City of Pharr’s director of public health, noting that the meeting marked her one-year anniversary in that role. ‘‘I want to say thank you so much for for being, open to a lot of the changes and things we brought forth this year,’’ Diaz said, and she thanked staff and board members for their support.
Diaz and staff announced that Danny Coca will serve as interim director for the grants department; Diaz said services and staffing otherwise remain in place. Staff also told the board that the city clerk’s office has been reorganized into a department and is reformatting past minutes for consistent official records; previously approved minutes will be presented for signature so the new chair can sign uniform records.
Separately, staff promoted the Avocado Festival on Oct. 11, noting the grants department will participate starting at 2 p.m. and encouraging board members to join the guacamole contest, dance and costume contests. Staff said admission is free before 5 p.m. and there is a $5 charge after 5 p.m. The board adjourned at approximately 6:20 p.m.
