Beau Burnett told the council during public comment that his petition table collecting recall signatures at a No Kings protest was surrounded by an angry crowd and that a clipboard containing more than 100 signatures was stolen. "They stole our petition clipboard with over a 100 signatures on the petition," Burnett said, and added that he reported the theft to the Colorado Attorney General, the FBI and the Pueblo Police Department.
Laura Hall followed, describing the stolen petition as containing election materials and personal identifying information for more than 100 individuals. Hall said she and other petition supporters had filed criminal and civil complaints and that police discovery has been delayed or incomplete. "I haven't received any meaningful discovery in the criminal case," she told the council, and said a Brady complaint has been filed with the Colorado Attorney General concerning missing audio from body-worn cameras.
Councilors did not take immediate formal action on the citizen reports, but the testimony put public safety and evidence-preservation questions in front of the full council. Hall urged the city to ensure the police department turns over body-worn camera recordings with audio and to respond to ongoing legal proceedings. Staff did not offer a legal ruling during the public comment period.
Next steps: Complainants said they have already contacted state and federal prosecutors and the FBI. The council did not vote on any motion related to the report at this meeting.
