Resident urges Shelton mayor to sign 287(g) agreement, asks for Riverview Park paving

Bloom told the board: “I was hoping to address [the mayor] . . . I was hoping to address him. Pertaining to, of course, the road at Riverview Park is still unpaved, and I've been asking the town to do that for years now.” He continued: “I was hoping to . . . talk to Mayor Loretti last month about signing on to the immigration and nationality act of 1996, so specifically section 287(g), which will allow our police department to assist ICE in removing the illegal aliens in town.”
Bloom asserted that federal law supersedes state law under the Constitution and that the Department of Homeland Security had said it would pay salaries for police departments that sign on; he described signing on as both a law-and-order step and an “enormous financial incentive.” The transcript records no response from Mayor Loretti at the meeting; the board president thanked Bloom and moved on.
The board did not take action on Bloom’s immigration-related request during the meeting. Bloom’s claims about DHS salary payments and legal consequences were presented as his assertions; the board did not substantiate them during the session.
