Sandpoint commission plans Cedar Street public‑art RFP; budget and regional artist pool discussed

The Sandpoint Arts, Culture, and Preservation Commission discussed restarting the Cedar Street public‑art project at its Nov. 14 meeting and agreed to develop a request for proposals to place sculpture or other artworks in four bulb‑out locations on Cedar Street.
Chair Ellie Sesnes said there is a modest dedicated fund from the Gretchen Heller account and SURA funds the commission can consider. Commissioners suggested a working budget figure of roughly $15,000 for the RFP and asked staff to check the account balance and prepare a draft RFP for review at the next meeting. The commission indicated a preference for prioritizing local artists but acknowledged the need to solicit a broader regional pool (Washington, Oregon, Montana, Idaho) to ensure enough qualified applicants for larger pieces.
The commission also discussed the possibility of using SURA funds to support an artistic topcoat for the City Beach basketball court during planned park resurfacing next spring and asked staff to coordinate further with Parks and Public Works if the commission wishes to pursue an RFP for that work.
No binding financial commitments were made at the meeting; staff will return with a draft RFP and account information.
