Pharr partners with Museum of South Texas History to give city employees tours, expand archives access

Representatives of the Museum of South Texas History and Pharr city officials described a new partnership to introduce city employees and residents to the region’s history and to make archival materials available for public programming.
Dr. Francisco Guajardo and Debbie Gomez of the museum said the program will include guided history tours for new hires, discounted museum entry and curated exhibits that draw on local archives the museum and the city will share. "We are excited because this is gonna be our model to be able to attract other municipalities," Guajardo said.
Museum staff highlighted specific benefits: orientation visits so new city employees learn local history and identity; access to archival documents (including items dating to the early 20th century) to support civic education; and joint events designed to engage youth, workforce and local businesses.
City staff framed the partnership as aligned with the city’s strategic priorities to deepen employee pride and community engagement. The commission approved a resolution authorizing the partnership by voice vote.
Museum leaders said the collaboration is intended as a replicable model for other municipalities and emphasized the museum’s capacity to host tours and curate artifacts that illuminate Pharr’s origin stories and region-wide cultural history.
