The McAlester City Council voted to accept a $5 million Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) DWSRF community grant to replace an aging 16‑inch transmission main on B Street, a project staff said will strengthen the city’s water backbone and reduce major service interruptions.
Staff told the council the total project cost is roughly $5.5 million; the EPA grant will cover $5 million and the city’s DWSRF (state revolving fund) allocation will cover the balance. Plans are complete, railroad permits have been obtained, and staff said they are preparing permit submittals to the Oklahoma DEQ before going to bid.
“This will replace that line from Electric Avenue on B all the way across town, across railroad tracks, across highways, up to the Seminole Tower,” staff said, adding the line has historically caused major shutdowns when it breaks. Staff estimated the project covers roughly 12,000 feet (about 3 miles) of main and that construction will take the better part of a year.
Council approved accepting the grant so the project can proceed into permitting and bidding; award of construction contracts will come back to the council for formal approval.
What happens next: Staff will complete DEQ permitting and solicit contractor bids, then return to council for construction contract award.
