Council gets parks, senior-center and community-event updates; senior-center to trial 9 a.m.–1 p.m. hours

Parks staff told the Ridgecrest City Council on Oct. 15 that a new part-time employee has been hired and the senior center will expand hours on a one-month trial to 9 a.m.–1 p.m. starting the coming Monday so staff can evaluate attendance and adjust programming.
Staff said the trial responds to feedback that earlier hours would increase participation; outreach to seniors and transportation assistance were discussed as follow-up items. Council members also heard that outfield fencing work at Leroy Jackson Sports Complex is nearing completion and that a ribbon cutting will follow when additional elements are finished.
Other community items noted at the meeting included trunk-or-treat on Oct. 24 (Crimagie Center west lot), a final movie-night season and transition of the farmers market to a new organizer (KTS Market) effective Nov. 1. Council asked staff to contact Social Security about whether a once-a-month outreach presence could be reinstated at the senior center; staff noted Social Security had provided services in the past but stopped due to budget constraints.
Why it matters: Senior-center hours and outreach affect access for older residents and shape how seniors can receive services locally. The trial provides an opportunity to collect attendance data before making permanent schedule changes.
