Taft council appoints Don Black to Planning Commission after interviews

The Taft City Council on Oct. 21 appointed Don Black to fill an unscheduled vacancy on the Planning Commission.
City Manager Jones said the vacancy followed the recent passing of Planning Commissioner Ron Orr and that the city received two qualified applications by the Oct. 13 deadline. Don Black and Jeff (Jeff Ferris) were invited to speak to the council.
Don Black described himself as a native Taftian with prior Planning Commission service and said he would help align projects with the general plan. Jeff Ferris described his background in emergency medical services program management, his work at Taft College and experience in planning and grant oversight.
Council members asked both applicants about qualifications, community service and how they would balance growth with preserving Taft’s small-town character. After nominations and votes, the council selected Don Black to fill the seat. Council members noted appreciation for both applicants and encouraged the unsuccessful applicant to consider other volunteer opportunities; the council also said the Measure A oversight committee remains short one member and encouraged applications.
The mayor thanked both applicants and closed the appointment item.
