Taft council members highlight Veterans Day, community service day and local volunteer groups

Taft — Council members used their non-action statements at the Nov. 4 meeting to promote community events, praise local volunteers and urge civic participation.
Councilman Ronnie Waldrop apologized for reversing the salute and pledge at the start of the meeting and encouraged families to consider the Taft Sportsman Club’s upcoming junior pheasant hunt for youths ages roughly 12 through the end of high school, calling it a valuable training and licensing opportunity. “I got my salute and pledge backwards, and I apologize for that,” Waldrop said.
Councilman Chabera urged voters to make informed decisions and not rely solely on social media for election information. “Make sure that you’re not relying on social media to make a decision for you,” he said, urging residents to do due diligence.
Council member Scribe praised local institutions and volunteers, highlighting an exhibit at the oil museum honoring community member Charlie Beard and thanking volunteer Fred Holmes for help installing the exhibit. Scribe also commended programming at the Westside Recreation Center and local needs centers that provide clothing and food assistance.
Mayor Pro Tem Bryant reminded the public of a Veterans Day ceremony at Civic Center Park next Tuesday at 11 a.m. and encouraged locals to volunteer at a community garden event sponsored by CRC; the mayor later reported organizers had already received about 230 volunteer responses and split volunteers into three shifts for the inaugural community service day. Bryant also noted that this Friday is the city of Taft’s 115th birthday.
The council’s remarks were all delivered during the meeting’s non-action “council statements” portion; later in the agenda the council approved routine consent items and adjourned to closed session on anticipated litigation.
