Sweetwater commissioners approve Oak Street parking lot purchase, annexation and zoning changes; beer and wine permits cleared

The commission adopted Ordinance 10 56 on second and final reading to approve the purchase of the Oak Street parking lot. The item passed on a roll call in which commissioners recorded 'Aye' and the chair declared the motion carried. The public hearing on the ordinance was opened and closed with no registered public speakers.
The board also took first reading on Ordinance 10,577 addressing the floodplain; the ordinance had been reviewed at an earlier workshop and passed first reading on a roll call vote with all ayes. Commissioners likewise approved on first reading Ordinance 10 58, which would amend zoning to allow industrial properties in the N1 zone along I-75 to have building heights up to 50 feet; the change was described by a commissioner as applying specifically to the I-75 corridor.
Separately, the commission approved an ordinance to amend the zoning map and annex the property off Pleasant Grove Road; that motion carried after a second and voice vote.
On administrative and grant matters, the board authorized the administrator to sign a tourism enhancement contract related to the 'Big Home,' an item discussed at a prior workshop, and carried that motion.
Finance staff presented the August distributions and warrants. The report included a Cigna health insurance check for $72,099.23, Galls LLC for $20,400 for two ballistic shields, JM Mowing LLC for $4,200 for tree removal at Eagleman Park, Alliance Title for $136,022.06 related to the downtown parking lot, and other routine vendor payments; staff noted a $2,400 line item that would be reviewed for specifics.
On liquor licensing, the liquor committee recommended approval of a wine-in-grocery certificate of compliance for a grocery store application. Chief Byron, speaking for public safety/licensing staff, said the application "meets the requirements distance" and that background checks had been completed. "We did a measurement score and meets the requirements," Byron said. The commission approved the certificate of compliance, then adjourned and reconvened as the Sweetwater Beer Board to review a premises beer permit for a grocery outlet/Bargain Barn; the beer-board action also passed after staff confirmed manager background checks and distance requirements.
The meeting closed with the commission adjourning and announcing a joint meeting with the Board of Education at the Central Office at 5 p.m. the following evening.
