Public Works representative Mr. Crocker briefed council on the Hopewell Convenience Center’s purpose, hours and current fee schedules and said the city currently charges $10 to dispose of certain appliances (a CFC/CFC gas-appliance fee) while the cost to the city under its hauling contract is increasing from roughly $15 to $17 on July 1.
Crocker told council the fee has not been raised since before 2020 and that increasing the CFC fee to $17 would more closely match the city’s disposal cost. He reviewed other accepted and not-accepted items, trailer fees and a surcharge for higher-capacity trailers. Crocker described a slight revenue loss associated with not matching fees to disposal costs and said the proposed schedule otherwise leaves other fees unchanged.
Councilors asked that revenue from the convenience center be studied as a potential source to fund facility upkeep and to prevent large remediation costs in the future; one councilor said she had no objection to raising the fee to $17 to cover disposal costs. Staff said they could present a more comprehensive fee review if council wished.
Next steps: staff will study the fee change mechanism with the city attorney and return with any required ordinance or formal proposal for council action.
