Commission advances landscaping ordinance amendment aimed at interstate industrial lots

The West Fargo City Commission on Oct. 6 gave the first reading to a proposed amendment to Title 4 of the city code that would alter landscaping requirements, particularly for industrial properties adjacent to the interstate.
Aaron Nelson, director of planning, said staff proposed reducing the required amount of vegetation for industrial parcels along the interstate, adding gradation among nearby zoning classifications, increasing flexibility for parking-lot landscaping and clarifying when buffer yards are required. The Planning and Zoning Commission recommended approval and staff included graphics in the packet to illustrate the proposals.
Nelson said the changes grew from recent discussions with an owner in the Sandhills development who raised concerns that industrial properties were being held to the same, high landscaping standard as commercial and multifamily zones along the corridor. "We added multiple graphics to help the reader visualize and understand how these landscaping requirements apply to a specific physical site," Nelson said.
No members of the public spoke in favor or against at the public hearing. The commission approved the first reading by voice vote; the ordinance will return for subsequent readings per the city’s ordinance schedule.
