County construction managers and the commission’s project committee presented the Phase 2 scope for renovations to the courthouse and the public safety center, and the commission accepted the committee’s recommendation to move forward.
The presented scope for the courthouse included courtroom reconfiguration, ADA‑compliant jury and restroom changes, mechanical and electrical adjustments and modest finish work. The safety center scope was heavier, with extensive demolition, new mechanical and control systems, plumbing and finishes.
Staff summarized the project budget: an overall figure around $1.5 million, with the courthouse portion about $350,000 and the safety center about $1.15 million; the package includes an owner contingency of roughly $179,000 to cover unknowns found in older structures. Committee members explained that some originally proposed items were trimmed to keep the project within acceptable budgetary limits.
The committee recommended bringing a final contract to the governing body; staff said the contract should be in final form the following week and that construction could begin in late October. Commissioners asked about HVAC, fire alarms, courtroom AV and phasing to allow the facilities to remain functional during work; staff and the contractor outlined a two‑stage turnover plan intended to reduce disruption.
Commissioners authorized staff to continue engaging consultants and counsel so contract documents can be finalized. The board will consider the final contract in its next meeting packet and intends to sign when the document is in final form.
Next steps: staff to deliver finalized contract documents (expected within a week), publish schedules and confirm temporary meeting locations while heavy demolition is underway.
