Staff said the amendment totals $716,436: $58,006.73 to replace two gateway signs that were struck by unidentified vehicles and $657,763 to replace a Desert Air HVAC unit at the recreation center. Public works staff said the signs were installed under a previous SPLOST project following Georgia Department of Transportation placement rules and that the county could not identify culprits or find accident reports; without an identified responsible party, insurance reimbursement was not available and there was no operational line in the SPLOST funds for replacement.
Commissioners debated alternatives — including removing signs, relocating a problematic sign farther from the highway and budgeting for future replacements in the FY27 cycle — and asked staff to account for ongoing maintenance of SPLOST‑funded assets. Staff recommended replacement of both signs; the board approved replacing the gateway signs by voice vote, then approved the HVAC replacement by voice vote.
Commissioners and staff said future SPLOST and maintenance budgets will include signage replacement lines to avoid using the building and maintenance general fund unexpectedly.
