The Whitefish City Council unanimously adopted a site addressing and road-naming policies and procedures manual intended to give property owners, developers and emergency-service providers a consistent, systematic way to identify and locate property within the city.
Michelle (staff) said the manual updates the city's coordination with Flathead County GIS and the U.S. Postal Service, clarifies when addresses are assigned or modified, and establishes a process for naming or renaming roads. The manual calls for council involvement when a road rename requires a public hearing (for example, when a duplicate road name must be changed or a rename is requested by the public).
Councilors asked whether renaming a road that lies primarily in the county would give the city leverage; staff said county statutory requirements can constrain changes when the road is outside city jurisdiction. The council moved and approved the resolution adopting the manual unanimously.
What happens next: staff will implement the addressing standards, coordinate with Flathead County GIS and the USPS, and bring any requested road-rename hearings to council when the policy indicates public hearing is required.
