Commission selects Ada Limon as Sonoma’s 2026 Treasure Artist

The Sonoma Cultural & Fine Arts Commission unanimously voted to name Ada Limon the city’s 2026 Treasure Artist on a motion made during its regular meeting. A commissioner moved, “Ada Limon be selected as the Sonoma treasure artist for 2026,” a motion that was seconded and carried by roll call.

The commission’s discussion before the vote centered on balancing national recognition with local community impact. Commissioners praised Limon’s national awards and local ties, noting prior outreach such as readings and visits to Sonoma schools. Commissioners also considered other nominees (including musicians and community arts organizers) and weighed rubric criteria like artistic excellence and community service.

Staff said the Treasure Artist traditionally participates in a spring reception, is presented with a key to the city and is invited to appear in the Fourth of July parade. The commission also agreed to form an ad hoc committee to plan the 2026 reception; commissioners volunteered during the meeting and the motion to accept the ad hoc’s nominees also passed unanimously.

The commission did not discuss any binding financial commitment beyond the previously noted reception budget; staff earlier said a $2,500 budget has been allocated to help implement the reception. The treasure artist recognition will be part of the commission’s 2026 programming and staff will coordinate logistics with the selected artist and ad hoc committee.
