Council members used the ceremonial meeting to highlight several resident resources and community events scheduled in early December.
Mayor Pro Tem Mitchell told residents that the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) is offering an emergency customer relief fund that has been available since Dec. 1 and can provide a one-time payment of up to $750 for eligible customers. She also announced a grand opening in Greenbelt for an American Job Center Community Network that will help with job search skills, including resume writing.
City Manager Yang and council members promoted the city's holiday calendar: the College Park Winter Wonderland market and tree lighting is scheduled at City Hall Plaza on Dec. 6 from 2–8 p.m., and the Calvert Hills Old Town Holiday Tree Lighting is set for Dec. 7 at the Amherst and Dartmouth corner from 5–7 p.m. The College Park Airport Museum will host a Santa fly-in on Dec. 6 with activities between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., including performances and photos with Santa.
Yang also announced the expected grand opening of a Raising Cane’s restaurant on Dec. 9 and shared its planned hours. The city’s seasonal 'Deck the City' decorating contest was opened for entries from Dec. 1–15, with public voting to follow on the city’s Facebook page.
Council members reminded residents of public-safety steps for the holidays: request perimeter checks, stop mail delivery while away, leave lights on, ask neighbors to check on homes, and photograph and report gang tagging. Residents were also advised to report smoking of marijuana in city or Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission parks, which the council noted can be a civil infraction.
The announcements concluded the non-legislative portion of the meeting; contact information and application instructions for resident assistance and contest entries were provided verbally and via city webpages.
