Cole County approves 30 days care leave coverage and adopts 2026 holiday schedule

The Cole County Commission approved a care leave committee recommendation to grant 30 days of care leave coverage for a county employee and adopted the 2026 holiday schedule based on an employee survey.
Larry, identified on the record as chair of the care leave committee, told commissioners the committee recommends 30 days of care-leave coverage with a further meeting planned to review eligibility for an additional 30 days. ‘‘Care leave is actually due to the generosity of county employees donating some of their vacation time or comp time to a program that allows for if a county employee is off work for more than the length of time that they have in sick leave or vacation time, to make sure that their pay continues,’’ Larry said. The commission approved the first 30 days by motion and voice vote.
Human resources staff member Jessica reported results of a post-meeting survey of county employees: of 140 responses, 64% selected option 1, which was to keep the holiday calendar the same for 2026. That option was presented as the recommended court order and was approved by the commission.
Commissioners also discussed the December 26, 2025 (the day after Christmas) holiday and expressed concern about coverage for emergency services; no formal change to that specific 2025 holiday was made on the record and commissioners noted they would await the presiding commissioner’s input.
What’s next: staff will implement the approved care leave coverage and record the court order adopting the 2026 holidays.
