Arts Commission postpones decision on Adolfo Gonzalez sculpture pending condition report

The City of Las Vegas Arts Commission on Nov. 20 discussed whether to buy Adolfo Gonzalez’s steel sculpture "Enriched Heritage," installed in January 2024 on the historic West Side, but agreed to postpone a final vote until January so staff can provide a condition assessment.

"The purchase price the artist is suggesting is $35,000," Laura Machado, cultural affairs staff, told the commission, noting the piece’s foundation was engineered for permanency and that the sculpture is stainless steel with protective coating. Machado said the loan period ends Jan. 2, 2026, at which point the artwork would be returned to the artist unless the commission purchases it.

Commissioners asked whether the artist would accept installment payments and whether the piece’s condition had been surveyed recently. "Has anyone been there in the last month to do a survey to check its current condition?" Commissioner von Bastians asked, and staff said a recent public-art tour showed the sculpture has not suffered tagging or notable wear but that staff would conduct a formal condition report before purchase.

A motion to approve the purchase was made and seconded, then rescinded after commissioners requested the condition assessment and recommended bringing the item back in January. Deputy city clerk Yvette LaSoya advised the commission that if the motion is rescinded the item could be returned with a staff report; the chair then called for a motion to carry the item to the January meeting, which was made and seconded and approved.

The commission did not adopt the purchase at the Nov. 20 meeting; staff will return in January 2026 with a condition report and the item will be revisited.
