Colonial School District outlines plan to meet federal web accessibility rules by April 2027

The presenters described WCAG as technical standards that address captions, color contrast, text size, alt text and other features so people with disabilities can use websites and mobile apps. “The guidelines outline technical standards for public entities’ websites and mobile apps addressing key accessibility features such as audio captions, color contrast, text size, and font selection,” a presenter said during the meeting.
Why it matters: The district relies on numerous digital platforms for everyday functions — from bus information to course access and lunch accounts — and staff said making those systems accessible affects students, families and staff who rely on assistive technology. The presenters said the district uses roughly 180 apps, including BoardDocs, Microsoft, Google, PowerSchool and Canvas, and that the district has notified major vendors about the new expectations.
What the district will do: Staff described an implementation plan that includes enlarging the existing curriculum/technology review committee, identifying impacted platforms, embedding accessibility requirements in vendor agreements and scheduling professional learning sessions (including a November session). The district presented an April 24, 2027 target compliance date, noting that population thresholds influenced the effective deadline.
On timeliness and enforcement: Presenters told the committee the district’s approach is to post timely information first and then update materials to add required accessibility features (for example, alt text on images). They said enforcement and any penalties would be relevant only if the district were “consistently and pervasively” noncompliant.
