Colonial SD outlines 'Hour of AI' for elementary students, limits activities to grades 2–5

District instructional-technology staff presented a pilot of an 'Hour of AI' for elementary students and described how the activities mirror Hour of Code lessons but emphasize AI concepts and data literacy.
The specialist explained the pedagogical intent: to introduce how AI systems learn from human input, to practice computational thinking and to surface questions such as "how does AI make this decision?" Staff said many activities are archival from Hour of Code but recategorized to highlight AI components; they emphasized that activities would begin in second grade and run through fifth grade. The presentation framed the tools as guided, classroom-led experiences that show students how human choices shape AI outputs using simple examples (presenters described an exercise that asks students to sort images of trash versus sea life so an AI learns to distinguish them).
The district said it has an AI policy (referenced during the presentation) that restricts some K–1 AI participation; staff emphasized safeguards and teacher supervision. Families will receive letters with links to activity resources, and the district will host a family tech night on Dec. 11 at CES from 6–7 p.m. Staff also said materials would be available on the district website and building principals could be contacted with questions.
No districtwide technology purchase or policy change beyond the already-passed AI policy was proposed during the overview; this presentation was informational and intended to prepare teachers and families for December activities.
