Coffey County commissioners approve routine business: minutes, hires, holidays, payroll schedule and lease extension

The commission authorized the Emergency Management Director to advertise and hire one deputy role (noted in the transcript as a radio-logical officer position) due to an upcoming vacancy; motion moved by McCurry and seconded by Peterson.
Commissioners also reviewed property-marketing materials for a county-owned building at 405 Neosho Street and agreed to bring a notice of a public hearing and a listing agreement back to the next meeting. Separately, the board authorized a six-month lease with SSM for the property at 1234 Old Highway 50, Lebo, commencing Sept. 9, 2025, and removed a first-right-of-refusal provision from the document.
On personnel policy the commissioners revisited a county pay-step system established in 2021 and discussed shortening the current 22-step advancement schedule to a 15-step schedule; staff were asked to work with department heads and bring a proposal forward to take effect at the start of a calendar year. Several items were referred for future work sessions, including the Airport Access Road permitting and a follow-up legal review of prior HR matters.
No final budget changes were approved at the meeting; several items were motions to advertise, finalize notices, or to direct staff to return with additional information.
