County backs Heartland Rural Innovators Initiative cohort application, authorizes letter of support

The Coffey County Commission authorized staff to send a letter of support and pursue membership in the Heartland Rural Innovators Initiative cohort run by the Center on Rural Innovation with Patterson Foundation funding.
Jenny Tappan, presenting for Economic Development, described the program as an 18-month cohort that would help the county prepare a technology-economy assessment and an implementation plan to grow tech businesses and remote-work opportunities. "It doesn't cost us any money to apply for it," Tappan said, and noted she had already sought and received informal support from local partners including Flint Hills Technical College, the County Chamber of Commerce and the Coffee County Library.
A motion authorizing and directing the chairman to sign a letter of support for the application was moved by Anadroff and seconded by Peterson; commissioners voted 'aye' and the motion carried. Tappan said she would attach the letter to the application and notify the board after the county applies and learns whether it has been accepted into the cohort.
Next steps: Economic development staff to submit the application with the commissioners’ letter and to update the board when the county’s status is known.
