Local canvass certifies 2025 city school election after counting 22 provisional ballots; turnout 12.32%

The canvass board certified the results of the 2025 city school general election after reviewing provisional ballots and tabulating recommended ballots, meeting members said.
An election staff member (Speaker 3) told commissioners the board reviewed 29 provisional ballots. Twenty were from voters who had moved and voted at a new precinct without updating their voter registration, and two involved name changes (marriage, divorce or legal proceedings). "So we have 22 provisional ballots that we would recommend a full count," Speaker 3 said. The board recommended not counting seven ballots: six from people who were not registered before election day and one from a voter who had already voted early in person.
Speaker 3 described the process the canvas board would follow: opening the 22 provisional ballots and running them through the tabulator, then entering final results. "This should not take them long at all," Speaker 3 said, and added that she would submit the certified results to the Secretary of State and post them on the office website the same day.
After the provisional ballots were tabulated, Speaker 3 reported a total of 2,278 ballots cast in the election and a turnout of 12.32%. "The addition of the 22 ballots did not change the outcome of any race," Speaker 3 said.
The board also addressed a Milford city council race that was decided by write-in votes. Speaker 3 said two individuals received write-ins but one of those two was not a registered voter and therefore ineligible. "That means the winner of that race would be Joe Buchanan," Speaker 3 said. Speaker 3 also clarified that the affidavit required for declared write-in candidacy applies only to first-class cities and was not required in this jurisdiction.
A motion to accept the election board's recommendations to count the 22 provisional ballots and to certify the canvass was made and seconded in the meeting record; the body responded verbally in the affirmative and the canvass was certified. The canvass board said it would forward the certified totals to the Secretary of State's office and make the results available on the county website.
