Gettysburg Area SD students outline spirit, meals and newcomer support programs

Student leaders at a Gettysburg Area SD board meeting described a slate of programs aimed at improving school spirit, access to food and the transition experience for new students.

Maylani Johnson, a senior and student-council co‑president, said student council organized weekly football themes, supported cleanup after games and helped run freshman orientation and back‑to‑school events, adding that online ticketing increased participation in dances and events. "We helped purchase items for the student section, to encourage others to engage in the themes," Johnson said.

Co‑president Lily Morris outlined operational efforts that she said came from student work with district staff, including a second grab‑and‑go breakfast site that is selling out most mornings and a new food Instagram to post daily menus. Morris said the council had expanded blood drives (now two this year) and tied a scholarship to the blood‑drive leadership role.

Tara Zimmerman, one of two district family navigators, described the Warrior Ambassadors program as a student volunteer effort to welcome and support new students. "Warrior Ambassadors was created to help new students feel welcomed, supported, and to set them up for success from the moment that they arrive at Gettysburg Area High School," Zimmerman said. Student officers described lunch buddies, orientation tours, Wellness Wednesdays and visible lanyards that help new students find peer mentors and resources.

Administrators and board members thanked the student presenters for their work and said they looked forward to future updates. No board action was required; the presentations were informational.
