Superintendent announces expanded bus service and previews school events and programs

During her report Superintendent Ellen Owens reviewed district highlights and an operational change affecting student transportation.
Owens recognized principals across the district for National Principals Month, announced that National School Lunch Week will be observed and thanked dining services staff for the USDA recognition and sampling provided at the meeting. She also recapped Walk & Roll to School Day partnerships with Portland Bureau of Transportation and Portland Fire and Rescue.
On transportation, Owens said the district is expanding bus service for students living within the walk zones of Park Lane Elementary, Patrick Lynch Elementary and Oliver Middle School. "Beginning Monday, November 3, bus transportation will be available to all students attending these schools regardless of walk zone eligibility," she said, and noted families must register students in advance to ride.
Staff said the expansion is part of a supplemental plan recently approved by the Oregon Department of Education and will begin with these target schools because of attendance impacts tied to socioeconomic factors and unsafe walking conditions. The district said it will coordinate registration with the schools and communicate with affected families.
