Greensville board reviews literacy handbook and preliminary SOL accreditation data

At its Oct. 13 meeting the Greensville County School Board reviewed a newly framed literacy handbook and preliminary school performance data tied to the state’s updated accreditation system.
A district presenter described the literacy handbook as a four-part resource: an overview and the science of reading; elementary and secondary reading-and-writing expectations; interventions and remediation; and a K–8 vocabulary instruction plan aligned to the division strategic plan and the Virginia Literacy Act. The handbook emphasizes research-based strategies, high-quality instructional materials, grade-level literacy frameworks, and a distinction between intervention (broader, data-driven support) and remediation (targeted, immediate correction).
The presentation also covered the Early Intervention Reading Initiative: K–3 students identified as high risk on VAL assessments are required to receive 2.5 hours of intervention weekly, while remediation remains available for students with discrete skill gaps.
In a separate presentation of preliminary Standards of Learning (SOL) data under the new school performance and support framework, Miss Whitaker reported numeric point totals and tentative school identifications. She said Greensville Elementary School received 51.61 points for mastery, 14.27 for growth, and 7.94 for readiness for a total of 73.82 points (tentative identification: off track). The middle school identified in the presentation received a total of 82.96 points (tentative identification: on track). Greensville County High School received a total of 93.72 points (tentative identification: distinguished). Miss Whitaker specified that identifications are tentative pending finalized information and noted that federal identification could change a school's category.
Board members asked when final identifications would be posted; the presenter said finalized data were expected but had not arrived as of the meeting and that the division would notify stakeholders when information is released.
The board did not take formal action on the handbook or the tentative SOL identifications at the meeting; the materials were presented for information and follow-up.
