Council accepts report on summer 4x10 pilot; most employees reported improved morale

City administration presented the results of an eight-week summer pilot that shifted some city business offices to a 4x10 schedule from June 30 through Aug. 22. The council accepted the report on Oct. 6 and discussed next steps for department-level refinement.
Bill Belt Knapp told the council the city received 76 anonymous survey responses. Key findings in the packet: roughly 73% of respondents felt team morale improved during the pilot; 78% said they were very or somewhat satisfied with the schedule; 53% said productivity improved while 46% said it stayed the same; 76% indicated they would consider repeating the summer hours next year. A plurality cited better work-life balance, fewer commutes and improved morale as benefits, while fatigue during longer shifts and childcare conflicts were the most common drawbacks.
Knapp said staff convened department managers to follow up on detailed comments and to find ways to accommodate employees for whom the 4x10 schedule is not a good fit. The council accepted the report and several members expressed support for repeating the pilot with more tailoring to departmental needs.
Next steps: department managers will consult with employees about possible adjustments before the council considers repeating or expanding the schedule.
