During the commission’s study session the petitioner’s partner, Sharag Patel, presented preliminary plans for a Crunch Fitness franchise at the Shops of Schererville, Lot 1 (715 US 41), a site formerly occupied by Joanne Fabrics.
Patel said the proposal retains the existing building architecture while updating colors and signage and adding a trash enclosure behind the building to match the complex. The petitioner described the space as approximately 34,000 square feet, with franchise operations that will run 24/7. Petersons projected daily check-ins of roughly 800–1,000 and a membership base near 6,000 based on experience at other locations. Commissioners asked about shared parking capacity and the location of the trash enclosure by the loading dock; petitioner said parking has been sufficient at comparable sites and the enclosure will be located at the east/loading-dock area.
Staff requested the petitioner return for the January agenda with finalized materials and noted that state and local reviews would follow the preliminary discussion. No formal vote was taken in the study session.
The petitioner said they are targeting a March opening, subject to required approvals and permitting.
