After in‑bay fire destroys pumper, Goldsboro approves using insurance proceeds plus reserves to order new truck
Summary
Council approved using $585,000 in insurance proceeds and general fund reserves to order a new pumper truck (estimated cost ~$938,000) after a 10‑year vehicle was destroyed in a station fire; fire chief explained the likely cause was an electrical short and delivery is ~300 days.

A Goldsboro fire department pumper was lost to an in‑bay fire earlier this year; at the Nov. 17 meeting staff reported the apparatus sustained extensive damage and insurance adjusted the vehicle at about $585,000. Staff recommended applying the insurance proceeds and using general fund reserves to cover the balance of an estimated $938,000 cost for a new pre‑built pumper rather than buying a used apparatus.
Deputy chief (or chief representative) explained the likely cause—an electrical short on a solenoid near the back of the motor that ignited and made the vehicle a total loss—and described efforts to contain the blaze so other apparatus and the station were not damaged. Council asked about insurance valuation and depreciation; staff said the settlement reflected the agreed policy value for the older truck.
Council voted unanimously to approve the resolution to order the replacement pumper and to authorize the budget ledger entry allocating insurance proceeds and reserve funds to the purchase. Staff said the new unit has a ~300‑day build time and delivery expected in about a year.
