Mayor announces Greater Defense Community Award; Minot AFB commanders thank community

Mayor reported Dec. 1 that Minot was recognized by the Association of Defense Communities with the Greater Defense Community Award, following an application led by the Minot Area Chamber EDC. The council played a video highlighting community–base ties and invited two wing commanders to speak.
Colonel Jesse Lamaran and Colonel Jimmy Schlebaugh addressed the council, thanking the community for support and describing the base’s unique missions. In remarks about Minot Air Force Base the speaker noted the base “is the only base that does that” with two legs of the nuclear triad and emphasized airmen readiness and community partnerships that support morale and quality of life. The commanders pointed to infrastructure and community programs — from a children’s museum to food drives and the Minot Airport Welcome Center — as examples of civic-military connection.
The commanders also described recent operational highlights, including a successful nuclear surety inspection and large exercises that demonstrated readiness, and noted modernization efforts such as the Sentinel ICBM program and helicopter replacements that affect the base footprint and ongoing community engagement.
