Rod told commissioners he had spoken with RDO contact John in Fargo but the vendor "didn't have any numbers yet for your meeting" and that it appeared a lease company payment may have been applied to John Deere Financial, leaving ownership and purchase terms unclear. Rod said he was "caught in the middle" and worried the price could increase if the county waited.
Commission discussion focused on where the county would obtain funding if it decided to buy the machine. Options raised included using $100,000 in gravel funds, ARPA funds, an estimated $27,000 from "prairie dog" funds, taking a loan for a remaining balance, or drawing from county reserves. Rod noted some of the machines being reviewed lack snow equipment; commissioners emphasized that the machine they had previously identified included snow attachments and known service history.
Given the lack of firm vendor pricing and uncertainty over whether the unit could be purchased from the leaseholder, commissioners agreed to table the purchase and have staff continue outreach. Commissioners said they would revisit the item at the next meeting scheduled for Nov. 10, 2025, or call a special meeting if contract terms were available sooner.
No formal motion to purchase or to commit funding for the road maintainer was adopted at the special meeting.
