Hamtramck board approves projection system, HVAC change order and emergency sump-pump purchase

The Hamtramck School District Board of Education on Tuesday approved three purchases the district says are necessary for operations and programming.
On a motion by Michelle Gahan and second by Miss Watson, the board voted to purchase a Loxido core projection system for the community center and athletic events at a total cost not to exceed $45,000. The purchase will be funded from the athletic department, the high school and the recreation department. The motion carried on a voice vote with five ayes and two members absent.
DJ, the presenter for the proposal, said the package is cost neutral because it includes advertising revenue and startup donations. “It literally pays for itself,” DJ said, noting an initial commitment from alumni-owned businesses to underwrite part of the first-year expense and training opportunities for students.
Later the board approved a change order for the Dickinson East HVAC project not to exceed $130,000. Facilities staff said the additional work covers replacement of nonoperational cabinet unit heaters and integration with the district’s building management system. The change order was moved by Mister Obey and seconded by Mister Boleynik and carried with five ayes and two absences.
The board also approved an emergency purchase contract with Ball Air Systems to replace failed sump pumps at Dickinson East after facilities staff reported storm- and sewer-related backups and a pump failure. The district estimated the cost at $106,065, which includes staffing, contingency and allowances for project unknowns. The emergency contract was approved on a voice vote with five ayes and two absences.
