Students, staff and community partners highlighted at Fridley board meeting

Students and staff provided a series of updates on athletics, arts and community engagement at the Fridley Public Schools board meeting.
Student presenters Alex Johnson (senior, football captain) and Sasha Buggs (junior) shared that middle-school participation has risen sharply this year after the district removed activity fees and provided transportation. Athletics staff highlighted postseason runs in football and boys soccer and noted individual milestones in girls soccer and swim and dive.
The district also showcased community-center activity: principal Afilavi Brancheway summarized senior kickoff events, a fall festival for early-childhood families, Tiger Club family night and an International Baccalaureate information night, noting strong turnout and diverse participation. Staff thanked community partners and noted outreach that helped attract more families into programs.
District staff recognized Laurie for completing a leadership academy and described the district receiving the Building Bridges Award from the Islamic Resource Group for community partnership work. The board reviewed upcoming events, including concerts, a polar plunge fundraiser for Special Olympics, school musical performances and a December Truth in Taxation hearing and business meeting scheduled for Dec. 16.
Presenters framed many of these items as community-building and student-centered and emphasized access and inclusion as goals for programming; no board-level policy changes were proposed during these reports.
