Greene County commissioners presented a flag flown over the U.S. Capitol to local veteran Ray Holloway and recognized the county finance officer for outstanding cash management during the regular meeting.
Don Davis introduced the presentation, calling Holloway a longtime county servant and advocate for veterans and youth. "For those who have served our country right here in this county ... Ray, you have totally ... taken what Jay Ray and Miss Irma had done, you know, continue to expand that work," he said as he asked Holloway to come forward for the flag presentation. Holloway accepted the honor, saying, "I'm honored to accept this. Thank you very much."
Why it matters: the presentation publicly acknowledges local veteran service and highlights community programs — such as the Boys and Girls Club — that county officials cited when talking about youth support and veterans' outreach.
Separately, county staff reported that Greene County achieved CashBest scores above 90 for four consecutive quarters and is among the first local governments in North Carolina to do so. Kevin noted the county "is the first county to achieve this in North Carolina and the first 2 entities in North Carolina to achieve this," and the board presented Finance Officer Sandy Shirts with an award for managing the county's idle funds efficiently.
What’s next: the ceremonial flag presentation requires no formal follow‑up. County staff will proceed with the recognized finance practices and continue to oversee investments and cash management under the finance officer's leadership.
