Norwood building committee: construction milestones met; final heating commissioning set before Thanksgiving

The Town of Norwood Middle School Building Committee heard progress updates Monday evening showing construction moving toward final stages at Coakley Middle School.
Luke, project staff, reported that contractor W T Rich finished guardrails and granite curbing along the back of the access road, installed posts for athletic netting (the netting itself still needs hanging), and repaved the Washington Street entrances and the outdoor classroom/play area. "The exterior landscaping and site improvements should be complete, around the end of the month," Luke said.
Committee members discussed several warranty and punch-list items that staff said have been resolved or are under close monitoring. Elevator 2, which experienced service interruptions earlier, has been tested over the last three to four weeks with no issues and was returned to normal use. Residential units that were experiencing nuisance electrical trips had GFCI breakers replaced with non-GFCI breakers; staff said the change resolved the problem but they will continue to track it. A piping change in the plumbing room reduced morning cold-water temperatures at faucets, and a third-floor kitchen cold well was reset and reported to be working without issues since the fix.
Staff outlined near-term scheduling: final commissioning of the heating system is slated for the two weeks before Thanksgiving; WT Rich’s demobilization is planned in December; a 10-month commissioning walkthrough is expected next June; and the final audit and submission to the MSBA is targeted for July 2026. When asked about a fenced area at the north entrance, staff said the newly paved extension of two parking rows will be striped and inspected in the next couple of weeks before opening for use.
The committee also received a brief update on the Nindeen site: the Department of Public Works has started relocating workout equipment and a path on the north side of the field, and staff said the green path material will be reclaimed asphalt provided by the town.
The committee scheduled its next meeting for Dec. 8 at 4:30 p.m.
