Oak Ridge Schools board approves summer school fees, textbook adoption, facility repairs and budget amendments

The Oak Ridge Schools Board unanimously approved the meeting agenda and a series of action items during its April 24 meeting, including summer school fee adjustments, a science textbook adoption, a facility repair contract and budget amendments.
Per the superintendent’s recommendations, the board approved the FY25 summer school fees that waive tuition for K–8 students identified as most in need of additional instruction and waive fees for resident high school students. "In order to encourage more of those students to attend, there will be no fees or tuition for those students," Doctor Borchers said during his presentation of the recommendation.
The board approved a science textbook adoption for the 2024–25 purchases covering an eight-year cycle: McGraw Hill Tennessee Science for grades K–4 and Accelerated Learning STEMscopes (Tennessee) for grades 5–8. Doctor Borchers said a committee reviewed TDOE-approved textbooks and signed a final recommendation after meetings in January through March.
For facilities, the board awarded a contract to Prater's Flooring Incorporated to replace the Woodland Elementary gym floor for $105,682, after administrators reported the original 1945 floor could no longer be sanded and refurbished. "It's just to the point now the only option we have is a full replacement," Doctor Borchers said.
The board also approved the FY25 audit contract with Brown, Jake, and McDaniel for the annual audit engagement totaling $53,000, plus hourly rates for non-audit services.
On finance matters, the board approved budget transfer number 3 and budget amendment number 2 (first reading). Doctor Borchers said the amendment includes a $400,000 contingency for anticipated summer learning camp, an added $76,500 in revenue from increased interest, and $76,500 in capital outlay for the Woodland gym floor replacement.
An exception to board policy 5.1101 was approved for one Oak Ridge High School staff member who recently earned a master’s degree and requested a salary adjustment; Doctor Borchers said the board plans to revise the policy to reduce the need for such exceptions in the future.
All motions taken during this portion of the meeting were announced as passing unanimously by the board chair. No roll-call tallies naming each voting member were provided in the meeting record.
The board moved on to informational items and closed the meeting without further action on these items.
