United Way describes weekend backpack and 'Success Closet' feeding and clothing students

United Way representatives presented the district’s weekend backpack program and a companion Success Closet at the Oct. 13 Austin Public Schools board meeting. Valerie Hallberg, identified as United Way program coordinator, said the program started in 2013, serves Austin Public Schools and partner districts, and currently serves 608 students across preK through eighth grade. Hallberg said the program moved to online enrollment a few years ago and that by May the program expects to distribute about 26,000 food bags; during winter breaks the program provides an extra bag to cover two weeks.
Hallberg described the Success Closet as a complementary service that supplies clothing, winter wear and personal care items to students (ages 3–18) and families. She said volunteers and school staff coordinate to deliver needed items and that last school year the program provided more than 400 items, including roughly 280 coats and about 1,000 other winter wear items such as hats, gloves and snow pants.
United Way and district staff emphasized community partnerships, student volunteer engagement through the GetConnected platform, and the role of success coaches and teachers in identifying students who need assistance.
