Cornerstone principal details student recognition, PBIS progress and attendance initiatives

Cornerstone Elementary Principal Jessica Brabus told the board that the school launched the year under the theme "Cornerstone All In for Learning," emphasizing three focus areas: impact, support and connection. She credited staff with implementing Wit and Wisdom literacy modules and described a renewed emphasis on science and inquiry-based learning on half-day Fridays.

Brabus said the building held its first-ever whole-school assembly to celebrate student achievement; in September the school recognized 46 students, 12 classrooms and four staff members. The school introduced two recognitions this year: the ROAR award (Recognizing Outstanding Attitude and Resilience) and a bus-safety recognition program in partnership with First Student, which provides gift certificates for outstanding bus riders.

Brabus highlighted community partnerships: the Excelsior Springs Community Center provided coupons and half-price pass incentives for recognized students, and the PTO's color run raised funds (more than 300 participants and over 30 volunteers) to support a planned "one school, one book" literacy initiative. The school also plans a family STEAM event on Nov. 13.

Board members asked whether recent dips in some growth metrics were due to new curriculum or teacher turnover. School and district leaders said they would continue supporting new teachers through coaching, grade-level collaboration, and professional development such as LETRS and ASPIRE training. Dr. Miller and Dr. Bullock emphasized a focus on growth metrics and supports for teachers to reduce burnout.

The board thanked Brabus and staff for the presentation and the school's community partnerships.
