Tiburon commission extends lower-gallery runs, earmarks March–April slot for local artist Brian Higgins

The Heritage and Arts Commission voted Oct. 28 to change the lower-gallery exhibition cycle from two months to three months, a move commissioners said will give more lead time for publicity and for underrepresented artists to prepare work.
Chair Arjun Gupta said the extra time would allow the commission to "get the word out" and better support participating artists. Staff described that the lower gallery had hosted exhibitions from Marin City Arts and Culture Center, indigenous artists and studios supporting adults with developmental disabilities, and noted the commission had allocated $300 per reception to improve opening events.
Commissioners discussed reception frequency, attendance and promotion. One commissioner suggested a calendar published well in advance to improve PR; staff agreed to create a clear URL for artist information on the town website. "If we knew a year in advance what we're going to be doing, we can get all that PR out there," a commissioner said.
Separately, commissioners reviewed a slate of proposed upper-gallery artists and reached consensus to pursue Brian Higgins for the March–April upstairs slot and to organize an ICB artists group show in a later slot. The commission moved to authorize commissioner outreach to contact Higgins and ICB to confirm availability and dates; both motions were seconded and approved by unanimous voice vote. Chair Gupta agreed to reach out to Higgins.
Staff will return to the commission at the Dec. 2 meeting with confirmed dates and additional calendar planning. Commissioners said they would aim to stagger receptions so that at most one reception occurs in a month and to encourage artists to participate actively in promotion.
The commission also heard a brief update that professional installer Michael Mingoya had submitted a proposal to create a permanent artist-laureate wall at Town Hall; the estimate for the additional installation work would keep the project under the $1,000 authorization previously approved by the commission.
