Committee finalizes glossary and trims references in the revised ELA standards

Committee staff reviewed recommendations from a member (Miss Dockery) and the group approved several glossary edits intended to clarify terms used throughout the standards. The committee accepted a new glossary definition for rhetorical techniques, revised the 'premise' entry to reference a 'line of reasoning,' and adjusted 'stance' language to rely on 'perspective' so it doesn’t duplicate 'point of view' elsewhere in the document.
Members also debated the phrasing for 'diverse texts' and agreed to retain a broad definition that includes complexity, genre, style, perspective and authors while adding 'perspective' (and optionally 'cultural origin') as descriptive language. The committee removed inconsistent italics used to signal defined terms and instructed staff to preserve italics only where intentionally applied (for example, titles). Staff reported a review of references and retained specific citation names (Sedita, Scarborough, Hoover, Go, Dehane, Wolf) while removing other unused items.
Staff reiterated the procedural requirement that members not add off‑hour comments in shared Google Docs, citing sunshine-law considerations and the committee’s need to maintain publicly documented deliberations. The cleaned glossary and updated reference list will be included in the transmittal materials to the State Board.
