The Kirkwood School District Board on Nov. 17 approved the district’s 2026–27 calendar after a first‑reading presentation by Doctor Rich, who led an 18‑member calendar committee.
Doctor Rich told the board the committee held multiple meetings and used a community survey that drew more than 400 respondents. The committee’s top priorities, as described by Rich, were a full two‑week winter break, a full spring‑break week, ending classes by Memorial Day, keeping final exams before winter break, and starting the school year on a shortened week to ease teacher workloads.
The committee also addressed a recent state requirement that the district provide at least 169 student instructional days (the presenter noted the district maintains a 190‑day teacher work calendar) and said the approved calendar includes six standalone inclement‑weather days before the district would need to use alternative methods such as AMI. Board members asked clarifying questions about staff development days, student-care programs during breaks and the constraints of Labor Day start-date rules.
Board members expressed appreciation for the committee’s work and the level of community input. The motion to approve the calendar was seconded and adopted by voice vote.
