Durham County names Eliana Vink as early childhood coordinator

Durham County Cooperative Extension introduced Eliana Vink as the county's new early childhood coordinator.
Donna Rewalt, county extension director, said the coordinator role was developed and approved by the board to strengthen countywide early childhood initiatives and to provide leadership for Durham's Early Childhood Action Plan (ECAP) and Durham pre-K efforts. Rewalt described Vink's background in public health, nutrition education, farm-to-early-care and school garden work and praised her data-driven, evidence-based approach.
Vink, who told commissioners she had been in the new role for about five weeks, said she has been learning from the ECAP builders and convening with peers in similar coordinator roles. She highlighted ongoing implementation work supported by ECAP funds, including distributed diapers, infant and early childhood mental health services in preschool classrooms, and peer navigators to connect families with services in their language.
Commissioners welcomed Vink and expressed appreciation for retaining talent within county government. Chair and other commissioners thanked Cooperative Extension for filling the position and signaled support for continuity during the transition.
