Board approves NEA, EJI and research grants and multiple community partnerships

The Jackson Public School District board on Monday approved several grant awards and partnership agreements the administration said will support community schools, arts education and research into social-emotional learning.
The administration said the NEA Foundation awarded JPS a $120,000 grant to support the district's community-school strategy, with the Community Foundation for Mississippi serving as fiscal agent. "This is our sixth grant award by the NEA Foundation," a district presenter said during the review.
Trustees also approved two grants from the Equal Justice Initiative: a $9,000 award to fund travel for 80 Provine High School students and eight chaperones to visit the Legacy Museum and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery on April 17, 2026, and a $7,900 award to support a similar trip for 60 Tougaloo Early College students and six chaperones on Nov. 21, 2025. Attorney Turnage summarized the EJI grants and the board approved both motions without recorded nays.
The board approved a renewal of a research agreement with Advanced Education Research and Assessment for Good, which the administration said reached 2,218 students in 12 schools last year and completed 824 assessments; the study will inform development of a social-emotional learning program.
Other approved agreements included an AMU Arts Foundation memorandum to provide performing-arts programming at Baylor APAC and Northwest IB Middle School, a license with Universal Production Music for instructional television projects, and renewal of Paper (formerly MajorClarity) to provide college-and-career readiness tools for grades 6'12.
Board members noted competitive procurement for the Paper selection and asked for clarification where appropriate. No dissenting votes were recorded for the items presented on the consent and information-action sections.
Next steps: the administration will continue to implement the grants and programs and return with any required follow-up reports or fiscal details as the programs move forward.
